Welcome to Extended Education

Master of Engineering

Area of study: Systems Engineering

This interdisciplinary program provides students the ability to engineer complex products, processes, services leveraging a systems engineering approach.

Systems engineering focuses on defining needs and customer requirements early in the development cycle. Systems engineering appears to be all things to all people. The official definition comes from INCOSE-International Council on Systems Engineering. The definition is:

"An interdisciplinary approach and means to enable the realization of successful systems. It focuses on defining customer needs and required functionality early in the development cycle, documenting requirements, then proceeding with design synthesis and system validation."

This flexible online "anytime, anyplace" program was designed with input from global corporations and targets professionals leading major complex systems development or programs at their companies. The key to this program is the amalgamation of several professional association and certificate programs:

  • INCOSE--International Systems Engineering Society
  • CMII- Configuration Management Institute
  • PMI- Program Management Institute

Below, a sample program of study is designed, but students can structure their electives based on interest. For example, develop electives across disciplines or concentrated in one discipline (ie: software, hardware, mechanical design, etc). Once admitted to the program, students can collaborate with their advisor on the appropriate courses to achieve their academic goals and objectives.

The office of Global Outreach and Extended Education also offers a 15 day custom program in Systems Engineering for corporate groups.

Admission Requirements

Students seeking admission into the program must hold a bachelor of science in engineering or math. Applicants must have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 in the last 60 undergraduate credit hours. No GRE is required.

Students must submit a professional resume and personal statement as part of the online admissions application.

Program Requirements

Students must complete a total of 30 credit hours equaling 10 courses to earn a Masters of Engineering Degree.

A culminating event is required and will be identified by the student’s advisory committee. It could be a final examination or the final report for a practice-oriented project (Applied Project IEE593). Additional requirements may exist for some academic units.
